Jamal vs  Prem (Slumdog Millionaire)

In the film Slumdog Millionaire directed by Danny Boyle an important conflict was that of between Jamal Malik and he Millionaire Show Host Prem Kumer. Techniques that Boyle uses are cinematography, and gestrues/dialogues.

Only one person according to the film has become a millionaire oevrnight, and that is Prem Kumer. He was proud of his achievement and did not want Jamal Malik to win the money. But Jamal was desperate to get on the show for his love and believed that ‘it was written’. This shows that the thinking ability of the two charcters uis very different from each other.

Director Danny Boyle uses some great cinematography to describe the conflict. An important shot was the mid shot that showed Jamal and Prem sitting in the chairs at the show (they were staring into each other’s eyes). Prem was taller, uptight and proud looking whereas Jamal was shorter, confused and desperate looking. This shot and the acting style shows that Prem reckons that he is “something” and Jamal nothing but a slumdog chaiwala. Another main shot was the birds-eye-view shot looking from the ceiling to the main staging of the seats. Boyle uses this shot to build in the dark, lonely, eerie atmosphere and how Jamal has to fight alone with getting teased by Prem and the audience. Anotehr imortant shot was the over-the-shoulder shot between Prem and Jamal before they went to sit down. Prem asks “Are you ready”?  in a cold tone, probably meaning “are you ready to lose”. But Jamal chose to ignore it and goes on thinking positively.

Another technique used by Boyle was gestures/dialogues. The charcter of Prem in Slumdog Millionaire is very arrogant, aggressive, selfish and sarcastic. He thinks he is “the man” and Jamal is no one, as he is from the Dharavi Slums. “So, Jamal Malik, garam garam chai dene wala from Aamchi Mumbai, lets play who wants to be a millionaire,” (Translation: “So, Jamal Malik, the deliverer of hot, hot tea, lets play who wants to be a millionaire,”) is a quote that shows how insulting and sarcastic he can be and doesn’t care if people’s feelings hurt. His moving of hands up/down like a tea maker and nodding are his gestures that prove it. But the character of Jamal is very diferent and gesture-less at the show. He is quiet and only responds when he needs to. “I don’t know, but may be, its written,” was his answer after he was on the
20,000,000 (NZ$700,000) shows that he is confident and bewlieves in fate and destiny. He also does not smile at the show until he gets the call from Latika and wins the money, and until then, he was confused and upset looking.
